Next chance at precipitation or showers is this weekend. But in all likelihood the greater accumulations will be SW of here with the chance that the WNY Niagara Frontier may not get all that much. The salmon are scattered and after the marks are found, they are not hitting easily. High winds and advisory is likely for something like Fri/Sat/Sun. Its unknown how much longer Canal drainage flows will last but it likely is not that long. The rest of the Oak, like after the confluence, were high water fishable by at least this past Sunday thru about yesterday as the overflow levels diminished. Flows in Johnson Creek for sure up and even stained from a pretty good shot of water. At the Waterport Dam, its reported there are just a few fish and likely none holding in downstream fast water runs or holes. Bob! Fishing pressure is real light again on the Oak so far today. Flows in the Oak are about medium and slightly stained with about 2 ft of visibility. Captain Mikes recommendation is using mainly a flasher fly bite yellow flashers, blue green flies. Water temps on Port Bay are in the high 70s and autumn is the time fish start gobbling food. Definitely on the moderate side of medium and not on the slightly high side of medium. No big concentration of fish in any one spot that we know of, except for the stranded for now overflow fish. Flows in the Oak down just a touch, maybe some of that love from Canal water being shared with Johnson Creek is responsible for that. Slower action there reported just lately after some good quality fish were hooked in the previous higher and dirtier water color. Fishing pressure most days pretty agreeable with salmon anglers falling out of the mix now and only mod numbers of guys pursuing brown trout so far. A few civilian small boat trollers noted in the near shore/good looking/semi stained waters off Point Breeze. It was getting a bit frustrating so since it was a short trip we worked our way back to the nose and started fishing for lake trout. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. The other area smaller tribs have med to slightly high flows with slightly stained water color. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. Fish have been taking mostly spoons with a few meat and flasher/fly mixed in. Anglers out over the past weekend reported a few hook ups on some steelhead by working different spots in the river. Team Screamer (pictured below) won the PRO division with a score of 447.19 and Team Roll With It won the Amateur division with 257.77 points (also pictured below). The charter fleet has had king salmon action in 100-120 FOW using chrome glow flasher fly combinations down to 60 ft. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?! Ground flow recharge from strong supplies might keep things up a little higher then typical winter levels but never-the-less things will be icing in or freezing up except for a few fast water slots. Temps are on the mild side, dropping down some at night and thru today and over the next part of the week we are getting some melt off which should be good for maintenance. DEC has received a few reports of dead fish on Sandy Creek and Johnson Creek, likely due to fishing mortality, but has not received any reports of abnormally large numbers of dead fish from Oak Orchard Creek. Classic drifting, not so much. They fished a little west of port between the 27-29 lines of latitude. If theres significant rain ahead of or instead of the ice/snow, then trib flows could be on the rise and going off color. Low water, aka an average fall, short leaders, BB shot is not likely to cut it right now for presentations, especially on the Oak. The other area smaller tribs have a fair amount of icing. Some Lake Effect Snow showers has amounted to a few more inches of fluffy accumulation on top of the 1-2 ft previous snow. Water color was stained with probably greater then a foot but less then 2 feet of viz. New York State is open for fishing and DEC encourages anglers to recreate locally at a nearby waterbody. A little more rivermouth action now. Its all about water flows Water flows are the single biggest factor in encouraging upstream movements of fish during the fall, winter and spring trib seasons. Flows in the Oak were higher yesterday but expecting that to retreat again toward medium and slightly stained. The working mans big trout and salmon trip is still here, and its not even a contest compared to the other exotic, far off angling destinations. Port Bay water is very warm and there has been weed growth near the south end. Those fish should be somewhere in the system and may be spread out now farther upstream. Tough time of the year for any serious drying out since everything will wind up essentially as runoff. Chance of legitimate winter weather and temps coming on by next week. Considering that January is usually a bit of an in-between time frame after the fall salmon/brown trout action and before spring steelhead, the few guys out taking advantage of the weather and flows are doing pretty good.
